(1) Preservatives
Benzoic acid and sodium benzoate are bactericidal and inhibit bacterial growth, and are low in toxicity and odorless, so they are widely used as preservatives. In a slightly acidic medium, only 0.1% concentration of benzoic acid can inhibit bacterial growth. Changing pH value has a great effect on the bactericidal and bacteriostatic action of benzoate, and its effect is significantly reduced in alkaline medium, and the best effect is when pH value is 2.5~4.5.
In the food industry, benzoic acid, sodium benzoate can be used as soy sauce, pickles, cider, juice, feed and other preservatives. Benzoic acid and sodium benzoate are also used as preservatives in medicines, cosmetics, toothpastes, perfume powders, tobacco leaves, etc. Sodium benzoate has a larger solubility in water and is usually used more, but its pH is higher and its bactericidal and bacteriostatic ability is much weaker than benzoic acid.
(2) Drugs
Benzoic acid, sodium benzoate, benzyl benzoate, etc., can be used to manufacture various drugs, respectively, to treat arthritis, abscess, bronchitis, skin diseases, etc., and can also be used as a local anesthetic. Benzoic acid can make benzoic acid salicylic acid ointment, benzoic acid salicylic acid ointment is made of benzoic acid and salicylic acid as the main raw materials, adding lanolin and yellow petroleum jelly. Among them, the combination of benzoic acid and salicylic acid can treat adult dermatomycosis, superficial fungal infections such as tinea corporis, tinea handi and tinea pedis.
(3) Fixing agent
Benzoic acid can be used as a fixing agent in fruit juice drinks. Can be used as a paste fragrance into the aromatherapy fragrance essence. Can also be used in chocolate, lemon, orange, berries, nuts, preserves and other edible flavors. It is also commonly used in tobacco flavors. Because of the small solubility of benzoic acid, it must be fully stirred when used, or dissolved in a small amount of hot water or ethanol. When used in concentrated fruit juice for refreshing drinks, benzoic acid is easily volatilized with water vapor, so it is often used as sodium salt.
