Methylparaben, is an organic substance with the formula C8H8O3, white crystalline powder or colorless crystal, with soluble in alcohol, ether, very slightly soluble in water, boiling point 270-280 °C. It is mainly used as a bactericidal preservative for organic synthesis, food, cosmetics and medicine, and is also used as a feed preservative. Because it has a phenolic hydroxyl structure, its antibacterial properties are stronger than benzoic acid and sorbic acid. Its mechanism of action is: destroy the cell membrane of microorganisms, denature proteins in cells, and inhibit the activity of respiratory enzymes and electron transfer enzymes of microbial cells.

Cosmetic preservatives. It is a phenolic preservative, effective against various molds, yeast and bacteria, but the bactericidal power of paraben ester is low, and it is usually mixed with Paraben ethyl ester, which has good additivity and synergism. Add 0.1%~1.0%. The antiseptic activity is related to the pH value of the solution. When the pH value is 7, the activity is 2/3 of the original activity. If the pH value is 8.5, it is reduced to half of the original activity. It will be bound by some polymer compounds such as methyl cellulose, gelatin protein, etc., so that it loses its anti-corrosion activity.
In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a preservative and fungicide, and is also used as an organic synthesis and corrosion protection additive for food, spices, film, etc.
